PIANO 2023: Competitor

Dongyuan Sun is currently studying with Hung-Kuan Chen at the Juilliard School (NY, USA). Born in China, Dongyuan began playing piano at the age of five. She has been admitted as a piano student since elementary school at the Central Conservatory of Music of China (CCOM) with Jin Zhang. She was also admitted as a student of the Imola Academy of Music in Italy under the guidance of Stefano Fiuzzi and Jin Ju, studying fortepiano and piano from the age of eleven. Early in her studies, she won several international junior competitions and began appearing on stages, including her concert debut with the Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra. During her studies at CCOM, she often traveled to Europe to participate in master classes and give concerts. Dongyuan has performed in various countries and nations, such as Beijing’s Forbidden City Concert Hall, New York’s Lincoln Center, Italy, Poland, Austria and Germany. Besides music, Dongyuan is also sensitive and passionate about other art forms, especially literature. It all started since she translated Rabindranath Tagore’s “Stray Birds” into Chinese at the age of thirteen, or since she felt like writing short stories for each piece in her piano repertoire. She feels that her music studies enrich her writing in many ways and that the ability to tell stories makes her music compelling.
